 Start Pistol

When the starter pulls the trigger of the electronic Start Pistol, three clear signals are sent that the race has started: the crack of the pistol, a flash of light at its tip, and a flash from a larger strobe light. The start signal is also sent to the Speed Skating Timer to get the timing started.

 Speed Skating Timer

The skaters compete, usually in pairs, on a 400m track with an inner course and an outer course. A lap on one course is followed by a lap on the other course until the specified distance is completed. The fastest time wins. The Speed Skating Timer measures intermediate times and the finish time for each skater based on signals received from the Photo Beam Unit.

 Photo Beam Unit

Photo Beam Units are used in many events requiring the measurement of time and speed. A unit is set up on either side of the course at such locations as the finish line, with light-emitting equipment on one side of the course and light receiving equipment on the other. When a competitor breaks the beam of red and infrared light, a signal is sent to the timer. A Photo Beam Unit is used with slightly different specifications for different events. For example, in Speed Skating events, a slim beam is used in order to detect the thin skate blades. In Alpine Skiing events, where the course may be as wide as 50 metres, the Photo Beam Unit is set up to function optimally in those conditions.

 Slit Video

The official finish time is calculated by the Speed Skating Timer, which receives a signal from the Photo Beam Unit at the finish line. The Slit Video System is used to judge which of two skaters crossed the finish line first, and as a backup to determine the official finish time.

 Scoreboard

The Scoreboard is installed at the rink side and shows the time of the two skaters on the rink. Because of the course layout, sometimes it is not easy to see who is leading. The Scoreboard shows the intermediate time for each skater at the end of each lap, and this enables spectators to tell easily who is in the lead as the race progresses.
